Demystifying Algorithmic Trading in the Forex WorldThis is the first article in a series sponsored by Thomson Reuters Is the time ripe now for using algorithms to trade foreign exchange?
After decades of being used to trade equities and equity derivatives, and as institutional money managers move away from equities and into new asset classes such as forex, can algorithmic trading strategies be incorporated? Equity algorithms have had tremendous lead time to be built, adjusted and implemented in trading. Not to mention that equity algorithms have evolved from the simplest volume-based to the most complex that adjust themselves when seeking liquidity.
But there is a world of difference between the equity markets and the foreign exchange markets. In stocks, there are myriad public and private trading venues from which to use algorithms – upwards of 40 while the forex market is traded by or on a handful of bank trading desks – also known also known as a principal bank trading market.....

How long does it take until you are comfortable with the trades you make?

I didnt want to use the word "master" but in other words, how long until you master the forex market?
I took a course around 2 months ago by someone very experienced. He explained the basics of fundamental and technical trading in a 30-hour course over a period of a month. I have been practising for about a month now on a demo.
I am literally in the baby steps of forex trading as I have just started, I do not claim to know much but I have been doing fairly well just by using the basics. 2 SMAs, bollinger bands and a basic knowledge of support and resistant lines has brought me small but decent profits. I rarely make losses and all the tiny profits add up. However I am still obviously uneasy when I make trades.
This obviously cannot be all you need to trade otherwise 90% of people trading would not lose money. I am no genius and I have no hidden trading skills. I am sure sooner or later this whole thing is going to come crashing down and I will realise there is still so much left to learn and my basic strategies wont help me.
There are so many strategies and the forex world is vast, so vast that I can see why it can take years to understand fully.
So how long until I am comfortable with the trades I make knowing that there is a good chance they will go according to how I predicted?

Thoughts on EMA-RSI methods can Bollinger -RSI

I’m a new starter in the forex world and still playing with demo account. I know there are many analytical techniques around but what I found particularly interesting was the success rate of these methods. Based on your own knowledge and experience, would you say EMA-RSI combo yields more accurate results or Bollinger-RSI or a combination of 3?

I'm new to the forex world so I do not know much yet but i was wondering whether forex traders like these times. By these times, i meant when the world is in a bad position since it introduces volatility more often. (or does it?) Have this affected any of you guys win rate whatsoever? Or do you guys prefer to trade when the world is much calmer?

What Pairs do people trade and why?

Having entered the forex world coming from a stock an options background, I’m looking for any advice on the topic.
Some places I look say trade as many pairs as possible, rather than waiting for the set up to come to you on a couple of specific pairs.
Other traders I’ve spoke to only trade a few pairs day in day out, some times only one pair, as it allows them to focus all of there mind set on one task.
What are people’s opinions on this? Especially for a beginner. I’m aware that the USD is the most heavily traded currency, however I’ve been warned to stay away as it is manipulated heavily by the big banks?

Gains. How big/small are you aiming for?

I am admittingly just barely starting to get a full understanding of the forex world, so I apologize if this is a rookie question.
I've been reading a bunch and going through the FAQs (here and other places) and doing the pipschool suggested here as well.
I keep seeing the mention of only aiming for a few pip gain before selling. Is that really the ultimate goal? Is forex not like stocks where you want to buy low and sell high but are willing to wait out some time to watch the market/shares fluctuate a bit?
Also, Do you experienced traders feel like this a bad time (globally) to get into the forex trading world?

Question about candlestick pattern recognition software

Hi, I’m a newbie in the Forex world. Over the past few days, I’ve been learning the basics on babybips School of Pipsology. As I learned the candlestick patterns, I was wondering if there is any candlestick pattern recognition software out there that can automatically recognizes some candlestick patterns like Doji, Hammer, Hanging Man and visualize them in the chart. If such software exists, have you ever used any of them? Hows your experience using them? What do you like/dislike about them? Since I’m a software developer myself, I’m thinking maybe I can make one that fits my needs and try to integrate to TradingView as I’ll be using TradingView mainly to practice my trades. Thanks!

Advice on Trading Sessions - Trade Only Currency Pairs Associated with the Session?

Hey guys I am new to the forex world and still in the learning phase.
I have taken courses, watched tons of video content and made notes.
Currently i have a forex demo account and trading account with a list of pairs i cycle through to watch for my setup.
I have a question though regarding when to enter a market...
Is it okay to enter a trade when the sessions for the one of the pairs in the currency is closed? Is it recommended not to do this? Rather trade pairs with currently active sessions? Lastly, is it okay to enter a trade which has your setup but... the setup appears towards the end the session or when volume/volatility beings to drop?

Looking for the best backtesting software?

Hi all, I am fairly new to the forex world and intend to learn as much as I possibly can. I have realised that backtesting is very very important so I would like to know peoples opinions on the best software. I have been using Trading View's back testing but it only shows candle by candle, like if I'm on the 15 minute chart at say 13:15, then move the the hour chart to do some more analysis, I see the whole 13:00 candle, so I fast-forward 45 minutes. If possible I'd like software that goes based on time with moving candles if you know what I mean?

Trading Contest: Rules, Benchmarks and Prizes.

I've now arranged at least one backer for the trading contest to provide investment prizes. Some of the details of this may be subject to change. Last week my girlfriend went away on a trip and in the car she took was a bag with two of my phones and one laptop. So I've not yet discussed the finer points of this on the phone with the backer yet, just briefly exchanged some emails and have an agreement in principle. I'll be able to confirm Sunday/Monday when she's back.

Initial Funding Offer

Testing investment of $10,000. Scaling to full investment of $100,000. Further adding of funding up to $1 million.

Requirements

Meet a tier 3 trader benchmark.
Tier 3 traders have to be able to produce an average return of 3% a month and never exceed 10% drawdown.
Results need to be over 9 month - 12 months. The trading data needs to be made available for quant team analysis.

Account Requirements

Results have to be produced on live accounts, with a funding of $1,000 (or more).

If anyone is able to produce solid results but for some reason can not afford to fund this, I am willing to sponsor you for this, providing the seed capital (essentially investing in you). For me to do this, I'll need to see you producing solid results on a demo account for at least 3 - 6 months. If you can, I'll set up something to allow you access to live funds trading without self funding it.

Drawdown Rules

Drawdown will be tracked with professional metrics. This means we are tracking equity drawdown (not balance drawdown), and it mean we're tracking equity drawdown from high water mark.

This means if you open trades and they float against you, but later close profitably the drawdown in running trades is counted as losses. It also means if your trades go into profit and later close at a loss the percentage loss will be from the high in equity. So for example if you go up 2% in equity profit and close 1% loss, you lost 3%. 3% is your high water mark drawdown.

So it is essential you can both control your running equity losses, and efficiently cap losses on unrealised profits.

Markets

The backer is mainly from the Forex world, but also willing to provide backing for results from other markets. So people can trade where they know best.

(Note: For me funding you, I'll probably only be accepting Forex. Logistical reasons).

Toxic Tendencies

Results will be screened by quant team for 'toxic tendencies'. These are known weaknesses in strategies that mean they can produce short term results, but rarely are sustainable. The most common example of this is martingale. Toxic tendencies strategies will be rejected even if they produce good results. If there is any chance at all of them being considered 18 months or more of trading history will be required.

Fresh Accounts

For the purposes of this contest, all accounts will have to be new accounts tracking forward from the start date of the contest. Backtesting or previous forward testing will not be accepted.

Further Funding

The funding available can be further increased if tier 3 benchmarks are passed. Tier 3 is the lowest viable results, with funding usually capped under 5 million (most commonly 1 million). If traders can beat tier 3 results and match tier 2 or even tier 1 results, a lot more funding is available.
As a rule of thumb, tier 2 traders have minimum investments of 5 - 10 million. Tier 1 traders minimum investments of $100 million. I will discuss in more detail with people how to progress through these tiers if and when it is applicable.

Time Scale of Opportunity

This is open indefinitely. The backer will probably be quite happy to offer incentives like this for a long time (profitable traders are worth a lot of money to those who can fund them). Even if for some reason they decide to no longer offer funding, in a few years time I will be in a position where I can allocate large amounts of funds to profitable traders - so I will provide continuity of this offer.

My Benchmarks

As benchmarks, I will provide a few different strategies that I know are suitable for tier 3 trading. It has always been in my plan to provide some strategy write ups for these for people to learn them, and then have them running with ongoing results updates for people to see how they perform. So I will just push on with getting this set up, and then use these strategies as my entries into the contest and setting of tier 3 benchmarks.

Starting Date

ETA for this is probably in the next 3 weeks. This gives me a bit of time to do the strategy write ups and finalise details on funding requirements and scale up of investments. I will update on this when I have a more solid timeline.
